Intestine, is it an 'external' organ?

Intestine: Internal or External organ?

It is an organ, the intestine, 7 metres long, where each centimetre is made up of around 4000 villi with a resulting surface area of 500 square metres, which houses hundreds of different families of microorganisms totalling 100 trillion bacteria. This organ processes about 30,000 tonnes of food and about 60,000 litres of fluid in a lifetime. Its surface is actually a barrier that continuously mediates with elements from outside and we could call it an internalised external barrier. Much of our quality of life depends on the health and activity of this barrier.
